Following his attendance at Carleton College, Eldon entered the UC Berkeley Economics Ph.D. Program. After enlisting and completing Basic Training/AIT as an Army Reserve combat engineer he returned to Berkeley to finish an ABD M.A. before enrolling in Harvard Law School.

After graduation from Harvard Law School, Eldon clerked for the late Eugene A. Wright on the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Returning to Minnesota, following a short stint as Issues Director and Legislative Assistant to U.S. Senator Dave Durenburger, he became the Supervising Attorney for the Residential Utility Consumer Unit that is now part of the Minnesota Attorney General’s office. In 1980 Eldon left to join his former law firm, Leonard, O’Brien, Spencer, Gale & Sayre, Ltd., where he was a shareholder for over 35 years while teaching evening law classes in Banking Law and Consumer Law for over two decades.

Eldon and his wife reside in Bloomington, Minnesota, where they raised two grown daughters, and now periodically host their families including two grandsons and a granddaughter. Eldon remains active in church, civic, and alumni events as well as professional activities, including leadership in Bloomington Rotary and periods of service on Bloomington's Planning Commission and City Council.
